Parents and supervisors
Pre learner
Supervising a learner driver is a serious commitment. You’re preparing them for a lifetime of safe driving. So instil in them a strong attitude towards safety and help them get plenty of on-road experience under the safest conditions.
Encourage your learner to enrol in myLs as the pathway to getting their learner's permit.
Refreshing your knowledge
It is important to remember that while teaching a young person to drive, you must firstly familiarise yourself with the road rules. Make sure you know the current road rules, are in the right frame of mind and display role model behaviour while teaching a young person to drive.
Heads up!
Did you know that even though you hold a driver's licence you can take the same myLs course, including the theory test, as a learner? myLs is a great refresher course on the South Australian Road Rules.
Using a safe vehicle
Think about what car your learner will drive. Inexperienced drivers need the safest car possible. Check that your vehicle is roadworthy and the tyres have plenty of tread. If you are looking to purchase a new car for your learner driver, it is important to remember that safe cars don’t need to be expensive. Cars with relative high levels of crash protection can be found at affordable prices. Check the safer vehicles section for information on vehicle safety ratings and features and use the My First car checklist when shopping for a new car.
Check your insurance policy to make sure it covers learner drivers.
Giving instructions
Learners need clear instructions. Early directions give the learner time to think ahead and ask questions. Use the 'At, When, Do' method with your Learner. e.g. "At the next street, when there's a safe gap, turn left".
Heads up!
High-powered vehicle restrictions apply to P1 licence holders under 25 years of age.
Being a Qualified Supervising Driver you must comply with the following rules:
- You must be seated in the front passenger seat next to the learner driver.
- You must not have a BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) of 0.05 or more.
- You must have held an unconditional full licence for the preceding two years (not a learner’s permit, P1 or P2)
- You must not have been disqualified in the last two years.
- You must not be subject to good behaviour conditions.
Using the log book
You’ll need to validate your learner’s compulsory driving hours in the log book section of their driving companion. Enter your name, licence number and sign the log book after each driving session.
L-plate rules
Check the road rules and learner’s permit conditions that your driver must comply with.
